“Mateo, where does it hurt buddy? Buddy, where ya hurtin’? Tell daddy, baby.” He sees no obvious injuries, so Tommy runs gentle searching fingers over Mateo’s face and head just in case he somehow managed to bump it against something else on his way down, but finds nothing. “Please, buddy, please, tell daddy what’s wrong,” he begs as Mateo continues to scream, his face scrunched up and turning redder by the second.
Tommy can feel panic sweeping over him like a heavy wave, and his eyes start to burn with his own tears as Tilly continues to scratch at his arm, crying pitifully, desperate to reach him, and Mateo keeps screaming and screaming. Tommy feels himself starting to disassociate, the edges of his awareness becoming fuzzy and faded, so he reaches his hands into his hair and tugs hard at his scalp until it stings and the world around him comes back into view. He can’t do this right now, he can’t slip into his memories. He’s gotta be present here for Mateo and Tilly.
IE: Tommy is not having a great day. Everything that can go wrong does.

Somewhere along the way, his girl’s gotten to believing that she’s a superhero. He doesn’t disagree, not necessarily, but he still sees the parts of her that are less man of steel and more little girl that grew up lonely and leans in to praise like a plant growing towards the sun. He sees it. Tommy and Maria see it. And evidently, Marshall fucking Green saw it.
Or, everyone has blind spots. Someone tries to exploit one of Ellie’s and its handled accordingly.

If she’s being honest with herself, the real problem is that every time she looks at those pink stripes, she’s back to that night in December, Joel’s sharp words ringing in her ears, sure as hell ain’t your dad, come dawn we’re going our separate ways, sitting on that window seat with her knees hugged to her chest for hours afterwards, staring at the wallpaper and waiting and waiting and waiting for him to come back and tell her that he changed his mind, that he’s not leaving her.
She knows how the story ends, she knows that even though he never apologized, he did wait for her, he didn’t leave her, but those stupid pink walls keep reminding her that everyone leaves her eventually.

Across the street, Ellie can hear the cries of a baby. She hates the sound, hates the anxiety that spikes up in her without consent and the simultaneous desire to make it stop and hating that she knows there’s already somebody over there doing exactly that. She hates herself for hating it.
Because it’s not like Ellie hates Leo. He’s a fucking baby. He’s got light brown skin and these dark curls of hair and no teeth and way too much drool. He has grabby little fists and a head he’s only just learned to hold up and spit bubbles that he blows when he gets real excited over pretty much nothing. He’s happy. Just, naturally. Like he came out smiling, doesn’t have a clue yet what the fuck is wrong with the world.

He finds Ellie right at the gate, back pressed to it and gun held out.
The sight of her makes him falter for just a moment. There’s no other word for her but wrecked. She’s far too thin, her cheekbones and the single collarbone he can see from where her shirt has slipped a bit under the strap of her backpack sharp, and there are dark circles under her eyes. She’s wearing a flannel that has to be Joel’s, though it’s rolled up to her elbows. On one forearm is a thick wad of dirty-looking bandaging.
On both arms are dark, splotchy bruises.
“-down. We’re not trying to hurt you,” George says. He’s a grandfatherly man, kind, even-tempered. He’s gotten tapped in to solve disputes and settle conflict more than once.
He is also, at a glance, winding Ellie up like a spring.

He remembered thinking Ellie was weird when they first met. She was weird, no doubt. But that wasn’t a bad thing. She was interesting. She could hold a conversation — often without Joel’s participation. The kids she was hanging out with were… just kids.
Their parents were assholes. They made little comments. They told her off for her language. There was an idea that Ellie was too worldly, being from Boston and foulmouthed.
