The bugs of Hallownest put the pieces of the kingdom - and themselves - back together after Radiance’s defeat. This plot is frequently and callously shoved aside in favor of Ghost having absurd amounts of sex with various bugs, with an especial focus on Godseeker.
There's an emphasis on Ghost navigating the responsibilities inherent in a relationship with Godseeker, and lots of existential waffling.

Summary
After the Knight devoured the Radiance and returned to the Abyss, Hornet was left to pick up the remains. Which included a child carrying a dream-like Light inside of them.
Despite the child’s relationship to the Radiance, it was her sibling’s child. So Hornet took it in, naming it Grimm and raising it as she had been raised: as a daughter. Hornet did so for as long as she could, until her own nature couldn’t tolerate a foreign light any longer.
She managed to avoid killing Grimm, but found what might be a worse solution: to dominate and control, before Grimm could do what her kin had done to Hallownest, again. Thus began a centuries long conquest, first as mother and child, then as wives and lovers. Though something like love has come of this arrangement, the damage done runs deep in both Grimm and their relationship.
