Summary

But the voices ignored him.
“Then I don’t want to cast it away,” said the child. “If it was with me, then I wasn’t alone. I don’t want to be alone ever again.”
A silence, heavy as eternity. Then laughter—not cruel, but amused.
“You could take it into yourself. Consume it. Make it part of you forever.”
“Yes. I want that.”
Something inside the shade broke. And then - something inside him mended.
