Summary
After Bobby dies in the lab, Buck walks out with his captain’s last words echoing in his head—and starts to fall apart. Grief turns into guilt, guilt turns into darkness, and Buck slips toward an edge he’s not sure he wants to step back from. With Eddie, Christopher, Maddie, and the 118 fighting to bring him home, Buck has to decide if he wants to stay alive long enough to heal.

“Buck.” Athena says flatly.
Buck holds out the wiggling bundle towards her. A tiny pair of triangular ears poke out of the little blanket, followed by a furry grey head embedded with big blue eyes. Athena stares at the cat. The cat stares back.
“Meow,” the cat tells her, in an almost exasperated tone that feels familiar in a way that she can’t put her finger on.
Buck grins at her, all breathless relief. “It’s Bobby!”
Or: Buck attempts to bring Bobby back to life. It has mixed results.

“Come on. You and me could—”
Buck caught Chimney moving to intervene between them but the words were already falling past Buck’s lips before he even realized he was speaking.
“I have a boyfriend.”
Buck stopped when he registered the words.
So, did Chimney before he shot Buck a look over his shoulder like Buck had grown a second head. Probably because, like Buck, Chimney knew that Buck did not have a boyfriend. In fact, he’d been single for a painfully long time since he and Taylor split up. Single and probably very obviously hung up on his best friend who didn’t seem to notice the way Buck would throw himself into oncoming traffic if Eddie asked.
