What if Madara had noticed his slow descent into madness and realized something was wrong? What would have happened if he went to get a second opinion from an expert? What if Madara had more support when he was struggling?
Or: Madara still left Konoha and tried to destroy it, but it was never what he wanted. Tobirama just wanted to save the love of his life but failed to do so alive. He wasn't allowing the same thing to happen even if he was reanimated. Madara wouldn't leave him again.

Anija remembered nothing of his past life. So did Kawarama and Itama, father and mother.
Tobirama was the only one who remembered. And had lived - in fear, skepticism, wariness, resignation, curiousity, defiance, disbelief, bewilderment, awe, boredom and eventual detachment, in that order - with the knowledge throughout his life.
The bell on the glass door rang dutifully, so he looked up from his checklist. And had a heart attack.
Madara. Madara. It was definitely Madara.

Written for Tobirama Week 2024
DAY 1 ∘ 02/13 ∘ WATER / IDENTITY / LOVE
Naruto had gotten it into his mind that there was something mystic about the lost city of Uzushio. Something that did not add up. And he wanted to find out what, so he gathered a group of his friends, plus Sasuke's older brother Itachi and their cousin Madara, and they set out to the Island of Whirlpools. There they met up with Senju Tobirama, the little brother of Hashirama who was married to Naruto's aunt Mito, making Tobirama sort of Naruto's uncle. And Tobirama was a bit of a mystery himself. A war hero who had suddenly packed his bags and left Konoha behind, never returning even once in the six years that had passed since the war ended. Why? And why did he like everyone in the group except Madara?
Or...
Tobirama plays guide, Madara learns things about himself that he had ignored, and Uzushio is maybe not as lost as the rest of the world assumed.
