Summary
Jaheira’s smile takes on that playful tilt it does when she’s about to explain whatever lanceboard strategy bullshit she used to fuck up one of Nine-Fingers’s operations. She says, “We are at a mutual disadvantage, Astele. Neither of us will look good if this gets out. You would not have placed yourself in this position without an intense desire to—”
“Oh, fuck the fucking fuck off,” says Nine-Fingers, relief hitting her like a train, and hauls Jaheira in for the kiss of her life.

Summary
“Maybe I should be the one apologizing,” Lia says. “I’m sorry if you ever felt you need to deserve your place in our family.”
Rolan stares at her. Is she angry? It can be difficult to tell with Lia sometimes. Right now the severe slant to her eyebrows could be remorse, thoughtfulness, anger, or any combination of the three.
“No, no,” he says finally. “That’s not it. Or . . . perhaps it is. I don’t know.”

Summary
She will burn the nest of poison vipers that calls itself House Baenre to the ground and their monstrous goddess with them. She will take control, reshape their world in her image, and she will smile as her mother rots in a sunlit flowery grave.
And then, once their conquest is complete, she will return to Waterdeep with her wizard and lay in this bed with him (annoyed, because he didn’t close the curtains properly and the sun is creeping in through the crack). It will be so, it will be good.

Summary
“I knew you’d come to see me tonight. Bringing a gift, no less.” With a lacquered fingernail, Jenevelle points to one card in a spread on the fold-up table beside her. Though he knows which it is without looking, he makes a show of stepping in and leaning close to inspect it: the Magician.
“Far be it from me to call into question your powers of prognostication,” Gale says, and presents the bottle with a flourish. “Right again.”
In the small hours of the morning, in some forgettable little town, two carnival performers share a drink.

Summary
She knows of Halsin—one survivor of the shadow curse’s fall ought to know another—but there are not enough hours in that first of their not-quite-days to share life stories, let alone life stories so long as theirs.
She doesn’t think much of him, because she is thinking about his True Soul friends, and what they might mean for this fight. But she certainly doesn’t forget his presence. He’s not a man who can be easily overlooked.
The High Harper of Baldur's Gate may be a confirmed city-dweller now, but she has not forgotten her roots. Meeting another druid who remembers the old circles, who remembers the arrival of the Shadow Curse, and who comes with a party of bright young adventurers just when she needs them, pleases and vexes her in equal measure.

Summary
Maybe it all means nothing. Shadowheart doesn’t know, and hasn’t for a long time. All she knows is that the voice of God is silent, and she yearns for its guidance in a form more comprehensible than an intermittent, stabbing pain in her hand.
So maybe she’s tired of feeling empty. Maybe she wants something to fill her in a more definable sense. She’s sick of obscurities, of foggy memories, of always second-guessing her own interpretations.
(“Do not mistake me,” rasps Lae’zel, amidst the celebrations back in camp. “I despise you. But I want to taste you all the same.”)
Well. Memory eludes her, but she's sure she's settled for less in the past.

Summary
She avoids looking at him until she feels the press of his side against hers on their makeshift bench. His body is still a little warm from her blood. There’s a crunchy part of a dead leaf stuck to his shirt. When her eyes eventually, inevitably fall on his face, and he gives her an easy smile, she realizes there’s still a drop of her blood on his chin, just under his bottom lip.
Without thinking, a complete mutiny of the body, her hand moves.

Summary
At times, she can pretend the lines, and the orb they come from, aren’t there. Since they’ve arrived in the city, he’s been wearing a cloak around his shoulders to ward off the chill that seems to come from the water, especially in the early mornings when a fog sits on the surface of the river, rolling along with the softly moving streams. The cloak is clasped around his neck with a pin they found somewhere. It covers the wispy evidence of his folly. She can only see the lines along his cheek if he looks directly at her. And recently, he’s been looking up, toward the city, and the decorated domes of the wizard shop they’re slowly making their way towards. Shadowheart isn’t sure what they’ll find. But Gale seems to be.
Shadowheart casts guidance.

Summary
“Just when I thought I’d seen the depravity of your kind at its fullest. Stealing a poor dog’s ball?” Shadowheart makes a grab for the ball; Lae’zel tosses it to her other hand, grimacing at the sheen of drool it leaves behind. “For what purpose? Just to ruin the day of a being actually capable of feeling joy?”
“By the hells, Shadowheart, she’s taking the thing for a bloody walk,” Wyll says from his tent.
“A walk,” Shadowheart repeats, crossing her arms. “Why?”
“I assume the animals of this world require some amount of exercise if they’re not to collapse under the weight of their own atrophying muscles,” Lae’zel says. “But you wouldn’t know, would you? Do the disciples of Shar pre-kill their pets so they can skip right to the loss?”
-------------------
Lae'zel starts to take Scratch out for daily walks. Shadowheart's determined to figure out why.

Summary
“Shadowheart!” It’s Gale who cries for her help, crouching beside Wyll with a hand on his shoulder. He looks just as terrified as she feels which is more of a relief than it should be. Thank the Dark Lady she’s not the only one so deeply affected by this.
Reality comes back to her. Karlach is pacing, looking at Wyll with a pained expression. Lae’zel is tearing through the camp supplies for something. Astarion is— gone? Wasn’t he just here?
It doesn’t matter. Focus. Wyll.
Once Shadowheart can finally move, everything else comes easily. She joins Gale, kneeling on the other side of Wyll. Wyll’s eyes are screwed shut in pain, each breath a stutter like he doesn’t remember how to breathe. Shadowheart lays a hand on his forehead and immediately recoils with a sharp intake. He’s burning up— hotter than any human should feel.
Except… Is he still human?
(Or when Wyll is transformed, it leaves him in a bad state. Shadowheart and the others all scramble to help.)

He had been on occasion ill as a child, yes, but his mother and Tara had always been there with remedies and kind words and a cool, wet cloth on his forehead. Here, in the middle of nowhere? He had his companions, sure, but he wouldn’t be caught dead asking for a bedtime story or a cup of warm milk.
