The good news about being a seasoned stand up comedian, was that you were more than well aware. The bad news was that, well… every punch line was landing flat, flatter than your audience’s expressions. If you saw one more person thin their lips or raise their unimpressed brows, you might actually leap off this stage and hope for the worst.
Your hands were so gross and slippery, you had to keep readjusting your grip on the microphone. You had half a mind to nervously wipe your clammy hands on the thighs of your jeans, but you had refused to let the audience know that they were getting to you.
Even if you were failing miserably– and you’d really like to emphasize miserably– you still tried to keep an iron grip on your ego. Where the crowd failed to laugh, you filled it in with your own awkward laughter; you were funny, dang-nabbit! So why is no one else laughing?
