This takes place in a timeline in which Sarah and John kept the Terminator programmed to protect John.
I like to think that as well as training John in fighting, Sarah would train John in all the skills he would need to survive the apocalypse and rebuild the world after the war with Skynet. This would be, basically, every peace-time skill on top of being the great military leader.
