Summary
Albatross helped Wyll to his feet as Withers finished casting and an ominous red portal spun into being right at the end of the pier. She inserted the claws of her thumb and pointer finger into the opposite corners of her right eye and plucked out the magical prosthetic, pressing it into Wyll’s hands despite his immediate objection. “I suspect more fiends than Orthons and Quasits can turn invisible. Use it well.”
He nodded, grabbing her in a brief tight hug, then reached out fearlessly for Karlach’s arm to help her up.
“I’ll see you soon, yeah?” Karlach was saying, as the sleet died off and she took a reluctant step towards the portal. “I better! We better! I’ll fucking, fuckin’ beat the shit out of you in the afterlife!”
“Karlach,” Albatross called just before they entered the portal: they paused. The paladin gave a little wave, just for her. “Taters, Karlach.”
Karlach froze for a sharp moment, then began howling with laughter: Wyll dragged her, laughing and crying, through the portal. And then it was done.

“Hey, soldiers!” Karlach said brightly, and dropped down to sit on Halsin’s other side. She rocked into his shoulder, knocking him sideways into Albatross, who laughed soundlessly and pushed back. (Halsin had spent most of his life among druids, who disproportionately consisted of elves and halflings and among whom he often felt a bear amongst deer: it was a unique experience to be between two tiefling women who might actually out-bulk him, but not at all an unpleasant one.) “What we making?” she asked, and leaned forward to squint at Halsin’s project.
“A duck, hopefully.”
“Halsin likes ducks,” Albatross contributed, and Karlach leaned back so she could raise both fists triumphantly as she said,
“Oh, fuck yes! I love a duck."

Steve's feet stumbled more than walked, but Hopper didn't care. He half-carried, half-dragged the kid toward the emergency room doors, his jaw clenched so tight it ached. Every step felt like it took too long.
As the two of them started to slowly stumble to the front of the ER, Hopper took a brief moment to think about it. Took a moment to think how despite everything—despite barely knowing the kid, despite all his preconceptions and assumptions, despite the amount of times Steve had purposefully acted like a smart-ass punk just to piss him off—Hopper had realized something tonight:
Steve Harrington was a good kid.
