The first time they were grown-ups, in the Golden Age, the Pevensies lived their lives almost entirely for Aslan - and then when they were thrown back to England, they lost years trying to recover their childhoods, going back to fight his wars for him.
The second time, they don't let him in.

If a lion's expression - already thunderous, if only by the wild edge behind his eyes and the deadly jaws that glint as he speaks - could darken, it would. It's a strikingly obvious cold spot in the paradise of warmth that he has torn down a whole world to create.

Черт возьми да, кратко передана вся суть. В детстве для меня Сьюзен была примером скучной выросшей взрослой. Ей не нужна была Партия, приключения, волшебная дружба. Ей нужны были чулки, помада и приглашения.
Но потом я выросла, научилась анализировать прочитанное, размышлять. И в ту же секунду меня поразила осознание того насколько же жестоко и по сексистски поступил автор. Сьюзен не пустили в Нарнию не за то что повзрослела, просто перестала верить и стала грешницей, а за то что она осмелилась быть взрослой женщиной и в этом её главных грех. Все остальные герои проходят через моральный рост. Питер в какой-то момент тоже становится слишком взрослым для Нарнии, но в конце концов он оказывается там. Потому что его мужской взрослый мир не грешен. Он может пить пиво в баре, обсуждать биржу, ставить на лошадей в скачках и при этом заслуживает спасения. А Сьюзен не позволены попала и чулки, ей нельзя чувствовать себя красивой, ей нельзя жить для себя.
Мне жаль что в таких на первых взгляд добрых книжках живут такие злые истории. И мне жаль всех маленьких девочек, которые как и я не любили Сьюзен, возможно в чем-то даже смеялись над ней. Мне жаль нас всех. Ведь все мы вырастаем в том мире, который заставляет нас стать Сьюзен и одновременно проклинает нас за то какими мы становимся. -

Pete stuffs some more noodles into his mouth and nods, smiling brightly, as if he’s calling him out on his bullshit.
Vegas takes a deep breath, storms out of the room and slams the door shut behind him. Let the idiot choke on his stupidly spicy food!

In which Vegas desperately tries to convince himself and everyone around that yes, he is still torturing Pete, and no, he is definitely NOT falling for Pete, and YES, he's still the fearsome Vegas, he just happens to be stuck in this stupid safe house with his stupid high-maintenance prisoner.
Maybe Pete isn't really the one getting tortured here.
