Summary
Robert climbs out of the smoldering wreckage of his father’s legacy only to find that he's no longer needed. Mecha Man is, of course. But Robert Robertson? Ha. No.
So he tries to piece his life back together, however hopeless a cause it may be. But then it's time to announce his--hm, not retirement. Convalescence? Close enough--and it goes just a little too well. Chase never calls in the favor with Blazer so Robert never gets the job at SDN. Purposeless, he lets himself backslide. Forces himself to focus on the suit and only the suit because it's the only way he'll ever let himself live again (as if Mecha Man was much of a life beforehand).
Then a couple assholes bust down his door because the neighbors called for a wellness check and now Robert's plans of dying in a landslide of pizza boxes will have to be put on pause.
TLDR: Robert and Z-Team fix each other. They fuck up a lot along the way.

Summary
A random villain-of-the-week makes Robert late for work. It's only by a few minutes, yet the encounter that hardly lasted a few seconds instills a sudden chill in Robert's bones. Its persistence is matched only by the Z-Team's stubbornness as they force their dispatcher to join them in activities they think will warm him up.
But none of it matters if Robert can't learn to believe he'll ever be warm again... or that he deserves the warmth this team brings him.

She didn't get a chance to finish. With a precision that should've been impossible for a temporarily blinded man, he pulled his arm back and punched her in the throat.

“It’s not a real kid, Chase.”
Chase is technically underage, he’s a year away from being able to drink but the bartender didn’t bother to check his ID. Chase has always looked a little older than he was, it works in his favor now.
Nobody at a hero bar like this would assume he was so young.
“How the fuck do you think that?” Chase asks, spits. His hands still shake with the memory of it. The beer in his hand shakes with the tremors of his hands. “How the fuck do you do it?”
Mechaman sighs, deep, disappointed. He leans back, taking his whiskey with him.
The rest of the Brave Brigade was downstairs, drinking in victory, dancing with the other heroes, celebrating.

Robert Robertson the third wasn't real.

He could speak and touch and do everything a regular normal person could. He wasn't extraordinary, no powers, no impressive physical prowess. He was the definition of an ordinary man.
Except that he was Mecha Man.
Oh, and he wasn't a man at all. He was The Astral Pulse, his father's greatest scientific achievement.

A study in autonomy, personhood, humanity, and how having shitty narcissistic parents that see you as nothing but a tool can fuck someone up well into adulthood.
Well let's hope a band of stubborn misfit ex-villains can help with sorting out that last one.

“Jesus,” he whispers.
“What, Jon?” Tim prompts, leaning forward.
“This is…” he scrubs a hand down his face, and gulps. “It’s what started everything. All those years ago.”
“Jon?”
He sucks in a breath, and reads.
“Statement of PC Lillian Westbrook, regarding the sudden manifestation of injuries on a young witness, and his subsequent admittance to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Statement given November 15th, 1995.”

There’s a new hire in Research. He’s small, and that is the word. He isn’t short, or squat – scrawny is closer to the mark but implies a sort of wiry lopsidedness that doesn’t fit right. He’s just small, like if you took an average sized person and scaled them down. He walks with a cane and keeps his head lowered. He wears some sort of brace or glove on his right hand. Silvery marks pepper his neck and jaw. He doesn’t seem to talk much.
“I’ve got a name,” Sasha reports, perching on the side of Tim’s desk. She’s just back from a coffee-machine gossip with Rachel, who had been ignored by the new hire in favour of staring at his shoes. “Jonathan.”
“Compensating for size with syllables, classic move.” Tim peers around her to mentally affix the name to the hunched figure curled into the corner desk. “Word of advice, avoid at all costs a one-night stand with an un-shortened ‘Bartholemew.’”
