“It’s not your fault,” Stan tells her. “You’re okay.”
It’s like she’s hanging onto him for dear life, a white-knuckle grip on the collar of his powder-blue blazer. His shoulder is soaked with her tears. She’s honest-to-God shaking, shuddering like a leaf in the wind, and Stan finds himself rubbing her back to try and steady her. At some point, her attempts at words devolve into painful, guttural sobs, and Stan sits there on the ground, with her bony elbows digging into his thighs, Bradley Lewis’ blood seeping into the tight-knit fabric of his jacket.
Still, he doesn’t let go.
