Summary
Growing old is a complex concept. Growing with others is even more so.
Sometimes, Mike thinks he just doesn’t know how to grow old without getting out of sync: so eager to bloom in the winter that he ends up wilting and withering by spring, when everyone else blooms and thrives. Mike had always believed that growing with someone was akin to vines around a garden arbor: wrapping around each other to the point that you lose when you start and when they do. High school and the Byers’ move felt like a part of him had been mistakenly ripped out during the uprooting, left to collapse under his own weight now that he lost the people he’d grown used to resting against.
But maybe he can still try to grow, bit by bit, starting with a phone call.

Summary
Will wants to stay right here with Mike, for as long as he lets him. It feels selfish and wrong, but Will has made a habit of longing for the kind of sturdy love Mike provides so readily, enough that he'll take everything Mike is willing to give, and still dare to ask for more. Mike always downplays it, says it's no trouble, but Will knows that's not true. He's a burden through and through, one who'll keep on craving more than he should.
But just for one night, Will lets himself want, and dares to ask.
"Can you just promise you won't leave too?"
(Lonnie has been gone for a week. When he sleeps over at Mike's, Will tosses and turns under the blue light of twilight. Mike comforts him, and makes a promise.)
