Summary
A shell falls directly in front of him and the stranger steps over it. Its metallic surface caves into the hollow center in globs like melting wax. The same is true for every other shell that falls soundlessly. So the stranger pays them no mind.
All the stranger knows is his foot in front of the other, the snow it sinks into, and the artillery dropping down from the sky like rain. Nothing else exists. Nothing else but the flat tundra can be seen for uncountable miles in every direction.
And so the stranger walks, head empty of meaning beyond the here and now…

Summary
Bill wasn’t sure why exactly he told Hamm and the others about the subway.
It must have been something in Hamm’s eyes, bloodshot and pleading for explanation. Or maybe it was a desire to share something, anything about his life. To connect with someone who so clearly needs it that Bill’s own vulnerability can be covered up as an olive branch.
In any case, Bill had forgotten all about it by the time night fell. A day of chasing Japs and then running from your own side’s short shells will do that to you. But it seemed like Snafu and Gene hadn’t.

Summary
Joe’s nightmares tend to be predictable. George’s scatter, running all over the place, tossing in things that couldn’t possibly have happened in real life; there are alligators in Bastogne, maybe, or a hatchet-wielding mime chasing him through Hitler’s Eagles Nest. Even in his dreams, George somehow turns the worst memories into a joke. (The darkest memories, the ones he can’t think of without convulsing from the inside-out, hide away at the very back of his mind, forcibly suppressed during the daytime. It’s the only way he keeps himself smiling, keeps himself sane. They don’t rear their heads often, but when they do, George is out of it for days.)
Joe doesn’t throw in anything. He remembers things the way they happened, and maybe that’s worse.
(Joe has a nightmare, and George is there to help. )
