Time is running out for Sam and the brothers are no nearer to finding out the third and final Trial. But then Sam does some out-of-the-box thinking and comes up with a plan. It's a horrible plan, Dean hates it, but it's all they've got. So he has to do the unthinkable and risk Sam's life - again.
The Easter posting date was random, but considering the story, extremely apt!

Summary
This started out as a collection of (most of) my first works in this fandom, from back when the show first aired, originally posted on LJ. I wrote around the time of S3-4, with absolutely no knowledge of what was to come. Then I had a long RL hiatus from fandom and writing (but not from watching the show!) and only started writing again recently, developing several integrated storylines (series) as opposed to standalones.
Back then, my writing was much angstier, as we headed towards the Apocalypse and the unknown; now, I'm looking back in hindsight with a different perspective. Then, I just wanted to explore and understand the nuances of canon; now, I want to play with it and tweak things, reinterpret events to fit tropes and ideas I like and tell a longer story. I clearly haven't changed my mind about any of the basics though.
Some recent ideas still fit the introspective, character-based (rather than story based) way of thinking, however, and so I will be adding to this series as they come up. The first six works are the oldest.

Summary
Canon divergence from S12. The brothers make a pact to avoid the Reapers throwing them into the Empty when they die. When the inevitable happens, they become ghosts, haunting the Impala (which holds their remains) - their unfinished business, continuing to save the world, Winchester style.

Canon divergence from 12:23 "All Along the Watchtower" because only one Verse linked to Apocalypse World and it wasn't this one. (Or there'd have been multiple Sams, Deans, Lucifers, Castiels, Jacks, Marys, Ketches etc. running around in there... chaos! Bobby would have had a fit!)
They have to dig Michael out of the Pit in their own world to deal with Lucifer, and he is completely insane. The consequences are even worse for Dean than in canon. Themes of self-sacrifice, possession and graphic mutilation (carving symbols into flesh).

After two vegetarian restaurants, an almost serious usage of the term “buttercup,” and an incident with Dean's mouth pressed against his ear, Sam came to the disorienting conclusion that they were quite possibly dating. Or, more accurately, that Dean was honest-to-god courting him like a modern-day knight in distressed leather armour.
