Their mother glares back at him and snarls, “Are you prepared to take the Dark Mark and serve the Dark Lord?”
“No.” Sirius spits out bluntly.
Her eyes narrow, “Do you have any secrets that would bring shame to this family?”
Sirius hesitates, glancing at Regulus with a look that can only be read as ‘I’m sorry’-- before the truth spills from his lips. “Yes. I’m gay.”
Regulus' heart stops, then subsequently drops into his stomach. He feels like he’s floating for a moment as his brain struggles to process Sirius’ words.
Their mother’s face twists with fury. “You disgraceful–” Her voice breaks as she reaches into her robes, pulling out her wand.
Regulus braces for the inevitable, but instead of turning on Sirius, her shoulders face towards him as she raises her wand. “Crucio!”
