Steve Harrington just spent the past several hours being tortured by agents of a foreign superpower for the crime of being best friends with a toothless thirteen year old.
So, when Steve Harrington thinks to himself, in the depths of what is definitely not a full-blown panic attack, "If Jonathan doesn't stop this car right now, I'm going to climb over the backseat and strangle him to death with the stupid fucking ascot I've been forced to wear for the past two months." He means it.

After the new year and the months since then, since his hair had grown back enough to hide the scar and he started letting them come to his house, she watched Steve carefully, learned what to look for.
She noticed the headaches and the migraines—the way he'd squint and clench his jaw and move a little more carefully, like sudden movements hurt. She noticed how it took him longer to answer questions sometimes. She noticed how he'd forget words mid-sentence and have to pause, frustrated, until he couldn’t even remember what he'd been trying to say.
Everyone called him slow. And stupid. They joked about it, teased him about getting dumber, and Steve always laughed it off or agreed with them, like it was a choice and not a consequence.
But Max could tell it bothered him; could see it in the way his smile would tighten, just for a second, before he'd shrug and change the subject.
And it bothered her too.
So she started running interference.

They've fallen into another world where monsters lived (which, this wasn’t even the first time!). Now, they've got to either figure out a way out or settle into life in this new place, all while dealing with a mystery involving their souls.
Steve blinked, and the whole world changed. Everything seemed grayer, suddenly, and there was a single heart floating in front of him and Robin.
The flower’s face dropped. “What the fuck? I swear I pulled both of you into the encounter.”
“What does that even mean?” Steve asked incredulously, bat quickly back to being raised in front of them.

Summary
Steve realizes after setting his alarm to make sure he wakes on the hour if he accidentally dozes off—can’t sleep with a concussion—that…it’s probably fucked up that he didn’t need a professional to look him over to know that he at least has minor head trauma. Like, it’s probably not normal to just know you’re concussed based on accumulated experience.
It’s not quite melted people monster levels of fucked but…it’s still fucked.
But he’s thrown from his bed either way, flailing as he sits up shaky for the absolute assault happening on his front door at…motherfuck, 2:43? AM?
Who in the hell—
Steve tries to ignore it. But eventually not even all of his pillows can fully outweigh the knocking.
He gets down the stairs, clinging to the banister—definitely not steady on his feet—and yanks the goddamn door open without even bothering to check the peephole.
So not only is it a surprise to almost get clocked in face by the rapid-fire knocking fist he barely dodges in time, but the owner of the fist: one Robin Buckley.
That’s the bigger surprise, by far.
