It pummels and bruises your flesh, hard knots of energy beating the breath from your body. Pain erupts through you, but it doesn’t matter. The physical agony is secondary. It’s nothing compared to the inferno raging inside you.
The pain burns its way into your mind, rooting itself so deeply that you can’t remember anything else. You can’t remember the way he had once looked at you or the way he had purred your name. You can’t remember the warmth that had once existed beneath his mask.
There had never been any warmth. Never anything but cold, cruel calculation.
