It all blurred together— sweet one moment, hazy the next— as if he couldn’t decide whether it really happened or if he’d dreamed it.

Summary
In which Mumbo crosses several towns, learns some creative methods of self-defense, fights some monsters, sees things no human is meant to have seen, befriends a stranger, steals multiple cars, has inconvenient moral scruples, grows increasingly terrified of his own culpability in the apocalypse, grows a spine, blows up at least one building, accidentally prevents a murder, and attempts to find his best friend in the futile but ever-burning hope the man’s still alive.
He has to say, he’s so exhausted and terrified that he thinks he might just be mad?
(OR: the one where, after most of humanity turns into a series of terrifying monsters, Mumbo decides he’s going to risk his life on an apocalypse road trip to try to find out if Grian is alive. Things, as you might imagine, devolve from there.)

Summary
Grian has been many things.
A servant of a respected noble family. A survivor, with bruises on his skin and hidden wings tied down to his back. A rebel, sneaking away for a night of wonder in the heart of the kingdom - and a curiosity, gawked at by all as the King himself swept him into his arms and spent hours by his side.
When Scar spent days tracking Grian down and helping him escape the cruel grasp of the Watchers, Grian thought his life couldn’t surprise him anymore. Pledging his life to serve Scar was all he could do to thank his King.
Of course, being the personal servant of the King comes with its' own risks - and now Grian could add ‘hostage’ to his list of titles.
Or; someone decides kidnapping King Scar’s beloved servant was a good idea. It really wasn’t.

Summary
The wind howls through the trees. Perched on a branch, an owl hoots, then takes off into the starry night. The moon shines, far above the forest and all its creatures, baring its teeth with a crescent smile at the ground below. Any other night, its pale light would be a comfort to those who are wandering through the foliage, lost and uncertain of the path home. Tonight, though, the moon’s grin is eerie. It knows something that no one else does.
There is a person standing in the center of the forest. Their face is shrouded by the hood of their dark cloak, which flutters around them as the wind blows. They stand on a flat rock, face turned to the sky. Eyes lifted to the moon. They do not move. They do not speak. They just watch the moon, in the same way that it is watching them.
Or, Scar meets a mysterious stranger while working at the bookstore for Cleo one day. He’s dragged into their world against his will, only to realize that he was always destined to be a part of it.

Summary
He was about halfway to the helicopters that he saw the heroes all finding various exits to the Vault, which was very rapidly falling apart and collapsing into the ground. They all looked relatively unharmed, nothing that would need a healer.
But someone was missing.
"Shockwave! It's time to go!" Grian grabbed his arm, startling him and breaking his gaze away from where the heroes were regrouping. "The heroes are going to send even more people, we have to leave!"
"Wait, there's someone still inside!" Impulse turned to face the Vault, pulling his arm from his grip.
"No, I did a head count, we have everyone. Now come on, we need to leave!"
"She's not a villain, she's a hero. I can't leave her behind."
Grian reached for his arm again. "She'll be fine, the heroes always bounce back!"
"Skizz isn't with them anymore, she won't survive." Impulse moved out of his reach, already going back towards the prison. Behind him, he could hear Grian muttering something about "stupid ex heroes and their moral compasses".
"Well, hurry! I'll be outside!"

or, six months after the first vault breakout, grian and impulse return to finish the job. they find a hero trapped in the rubble.
