Shouta sits idly behind the counter. He’s been here since six the previous evening. It’s been a slow night, his preference, though it doesn’t help him pay the bills. Maybe he could try to nap again.
The door chimes. He sighs and looks up at the man who just walked in. He’s slim, wearing tight black jeans, yellow lensed glasses, and a ridiculous cropped leather jacket. His blond hair is up in a tight yet messy bun, coming apart at the edges and allowing strands of hair to fall in his face. He looks way too chipper for three in the morning, way too energetic for the light bags under his eyes, showing through concealer that has been rubbed away, he’s-

“Enigmatic?” Shōta repeats.
“Yeah. Would you rather a different adjective?” Yamada asks. “How about elusive? Mysterious. Ominous.” He pauses. “Spooky?”
Shōta raises an eyebrow.
“Hey! These are all great things,” Yamada defends. “Also, abrasive, a little, but—”
Shōta turns away, having had enough of this character assassination from a rising pop star.
“Hey! I love abrasiveness!” Yamada shouts after him.
Shōta pauses and turns around. Yamada grins and shoots him a finger gun. Shōta readjusts his bag on his shoulder and says, “Loud, showy, kitschy, irritating.”
Yamada’s smile doesn’t falter.- - -
After the death of his best friend, Shōta struggles to find a reason to keep going, both in his artistic practice and in his life. On a whim, he takes a job as a concert photographer for Present Mic, and several months of sharing a tour bus with Yamada Hizashi might be the thing to help him recover.

Summary
Most people going about their day-to-day lives didn’t stop to think about the ways the infrastructure of their city posed a danger to them; but Hizashi wasn’t ‘most people.’
Over the years, he had learned as much as he could about the bones and arteries that held a city together; the strengths and weaknesses of the structures above and below ground that kept life flowing. Buildings, tunnels, roadways, and bridges each had their own unique risk factors, and Hizashi had made it a point to understand as much as he could about what conditions might lead to catastrophic failure.
Unfortunately, all that understanding did precisely jack shit when barely twenty meters ahead of him, right in the middle of the roadway, the earth opened up with a rumble and devoured his best friend.

Shouta threw out a length of his binding cloth and swung off the ledge of the rooftop. It was muscle memory as much as anything else; he’d done it thousands of times. But even with the familiarity, it still gave him a rush; a flutter of nerves in his gut as he was momentarily in freefall.
