“Karen, it’s me,” he says, his voice rough but quiet. “Open up. Please?”
The lock clicks almost immediately, and the door opens. She’s standing there barefoot, in jeans and a worn Columbia crewneck sweatshirt, her blonde hair still damp from the shower and twisted into a loose bun at the top of her head.
Her eyes sweep over him, cataloging every cut and bruise that hadn’t been there the day before. They linger on his face, on his left eye that’s purple and swollen.
“You look like shit,” she says, pushing the door wide and stepping back to let him in. There’s no heat behind the words, just a thread of worry and exhaustion. “Been busy?”
Frank huffs a breath, almost laughing because, that’s the understatement of the fucking century. “Yeah, somethin’ like that.”

“So that’s it,” he said bleakly, rubbing his nose.
“Yeah. That’s it. I—” Karen paused, looked back at him, and sniffed. “I gotta get out of here, Frank,” she whispered. “And you can’t come with me.”
“Don’t do that,” he said hoarsely, looking away from her soft blue eyes, the strands of golden hair catchin’ the light. “Don’t throw my own goddamn words in my face, Karen. Please.”

Summary
Imprisoned in the Red Hook dungeon, Frank realizes the prisoner on the other side of the wall from him is someone important.
Excerpt:
“No,” the man snapped, slightly irritated. “I’m a lawyer. Franklin Nelson.”Frank’s body locked up, like a trigger half-pulled. Time seemed to stand still. He could feel every bead of sweat on his brow, the ache of the bruises on his ribs, the way the cuffs dug in too tight to the flesh of his wrists. Not a single one of his muscles moved. He was pretty sure his heart stopped beating as comprehension washed over him, violent, impossible knowing. His ears were ringing as if he’d just taken a blow to the head, every nerve sparking in disbelief.

He shut his eyes and tears he hadn’t felt gathering ran down his cheeks.
“. . . so do I just call you New Guy, for now?” Nelson prompted, when Frank did not reciprocate sharing his identity. “You don’t have to tell me your life story or anything, just thought we could get acquainted. Since we’re gonna be neighbors for a bit.”
Frank fought through his stunned paralysis and made himself form words.
“Son of a bitch,” he gasped out. “You’re. . . Foggy Nelson.”
