    Summary

Xie Lian has been imprisoned in the coffin for who knows how long. When he finally gets out, he's met with a slew of problems- and an unexpected friend.

    ----------

XIe Lian lay among a patch of brush for days or weeks, he couldn’t tell, letting his body knit itself together and grow accustomed to the brightness of the world. When he confirmed he was whole and unwounded, he snuck out to a river in the middle of the night to wash himself or drown himself, whichever came first. He didn’t look at his reflection– he didn’t want to know what a horrifying sight he must have been. He submerged himself completely, trying his hardest to clean the dirt and blood and who knows what else from his hair, his skin, and his robes. The water ran red and brown, and he didn’t leave the river until several hours later, when the stench of dried blood had lessened enough to be bearable. He thought maybe he’d drowned in the water. He crawled, dripping wet and shivering, to a meadow hidden in the woods, where he lay hoping that the sun would dry him off tomorrow.

It was there, the next day, that the red fox found him.

"Have we met?" Xie Lian smiles his employee-of-the-month winning smile.

    "Maybe," smirks Hard-Cock.

    "Sure. For here or takeaway?"

"Peppermint cocoa for here, please. And your Valentine's plans?"

He's unfazed by Xie Lian's dryness, which he has to admit is interesting. Unfortunately, Xie Lian is very, very tired. And so his filters aren't what they really ought to be when working in customer service.

"I'm going to order in some food, watch my favourite film, and then cry myself to sleep."

After Jun Wu breaks up with Xie Lian, it takes good friends and a persistent stranger to get Xie Lian to want to live his life again.

"I'm sorry I've made you wait, gege."

The voice that was dearest to him saying that familiar nickname made his heart and eyes well up. Xie Lian shook his head a little with a smile. There was no need for apologies. He would have waited forever.

    ! INDEFINITE HIATUS - LAW SCHOOL !

    NSFW Chapter Guide: 9, 11, 14, 21, (TBA)

Pei Ming's head snapped up. "Wait, seriously? You were a neurosurgeon?"
Xie Lian nodded. "Yes. At Wuhan Union Hospital for several years."
"And now you mop floors?" Pei Ming asked incredulously.
"Yes, now I mop floors,” Xie Lian replied with a faint smile. “And I'm perfectly content doing so."

    TL;DR:
Disgraced ex-neuro surgeon Xie Lian becomes a janitor, tries not to have a breakdown, accidentally starts helping again via sticky notes, gets railed by a hot trauma surgeon, and then gets blackmailed into hospital embezzlement.

It’s fine. He’s fine. Everything is very normal and fine.

    This fic contains:
    – brain-breaking sex and brain-putting-back-in-afterward sex
    – Catholic levels of guilt
    – moral rot in the healthcare system
    – Texaco Mike
    – medical surgeons as a metaphor for godhood
    – and one man’s slow descent into bureaucratically sanctioned hell

NOTE: Smut scenes are modular, meaning you can read them, skip them, or come back to them later (for research, obviously). They're my magna opera, but you won’t miss any essential plot by skipping them.
