Things Steve was not expecting (aside from "literally everything about this situation") on his first visit to Asgard: getting roped into a temporary job as Odin's errand boy, seeing an immensely powerful and ancient alien about an immensely powerful and ancient artifact, and touring said alien's bizarre collection of things and beings from across the galaxy.
Things he really, really wasn't expecting: finding Thor's not-actually-dead-after-all brother in a museum case as part of the collection. (The fact that this discovery results in various kinds of trouble is pretty much par for the course at this point, though.)
[This fic was originally started for MCU AU Fest in 2017 and finished for Marvel Big Bang the same year...and then finally revised into a more presentable state for WIP Big Bang in 2021.]

Something happened. Kakashi hasn't figured it out quite yet. As soon as he wakes from something, having forgotten everything and even who he was, he's fleeing a castle with a little boy and his guardian. Moments ago, he was stone. Now? He appears to be a living breathing shinobi, and something is happening to people that he feels, instinctively, he needs to protect.

“You were just stone!” Naruto shouted, ignoring the hiss of his sensei’s instructions. “Why are you a person now?”
“Naruto,” Iruka said, sounding like the ever-suffering teacher. “You– you’re literally magic too.”
“Don’t act like you weren’t shocked either, Iruka-sensei!” Naruto shouted again.
Actually, that might just be his regular volume. Kakashi’s head already hurt.--
