Before she even knew what was happening, Ellie was dashing back across the field away from the school. She hopped the fence easily, clearing it like she didn’t trip on the porch steps every other time she left her house, and then she made it to the decrepit parking lot at the front of the building and she just kept going.
Hot, angry tears were streaming down her face by the time she came flying around the corner of her street. She almost ate shit coming up the stupid front porch, but she refused to slow even a little as she threw open the front door and slammed it shut behind her.

After three days with no sign of him, she decides to sneak out and try to save him herself. When Joel finally does come home, it's to receive word that his kid is missing and so he heads right back out to go find her before she runs into danger. Because if there's one thing they can both agree on, it's that the world outside the walls of Jackson is stock-full of dangers.

Summary

Ellie saw the flash from the gun, her eyes widening in despair. The sound crushed her heart, and an animalistic cry ripped through her throat as she realized who the target had been. Agony seized her as she realized that-- once again-- she had been spared and that Dina, however, had not.
In a rage, Ellie pulled her gun up and shot wildly, blindly, allowing her other senses to take over in the darkened landscapes. Occasionally there’d come a shout, a whine of despair, and Ellie would know she’d shot one of the bastards responsible. She was trembling as she yelled, “I’ll gut you all like pigs! You hear me? You’re dead! You’re fucking dead!”
