Galinda gasped dramatically and sat back up, staring at him like he’d said something mortally offensive. “We have! And we… might be? Anyway, we held hands merely today, in Dr Dillamond’s class.”
Fiyero felt his eyebrows furrow. “Have you kissed while… not drunk?”
Galinda paused for a moment, then gasped again, bringing her hand to her chest and smiling dreamily. “Not yet, we’re waiting for a special moment.”
“Does she know that you’re planning to kiss her?”
“Of course she does. Elphie’s not a fool; she’s sharp as a hat.”
“Tack.”
“What?”

It keeps her up at night, wondering whether Elphie felt the same— like something else, after university, after all of the hurt she’d endured, could exist, and if she picked Fiyero to have that with, and not Glinda. It keeps her up at night because she misses him too, how he held her; it was nice to be held. She misses everything, and she knows she can never get any of it back. Everybody who knew her, really knew her, is gone.
Or so she thought.
