    Max readied himself to play his bagpipes, and saw as Ruby caught the motion in her periphery, her eyes widening in alarm. She made a sharp, frantic gesture that conveyed Someone stop him!! as clearly as if she'd said the words aloud. Broghini took a step towards Max, reaching out as if to either clap a hand over his mouth or wrestle his instrument away from him. Max sidestepped the paltry attack with ease.

    Gleefully, he brought the bagpipes to his mouth. Right as he took a deep breath in, he heard Broghini say, "Wizzy, do something!" and a frantic rustle of fabric, but it was already too late. What would Mr. Wizard be able to do?

    Warm, familiar hands clamped on the sides of his face, and he was turned forcibly sideways. He had just enough time to see the pale green of Mr. Wizard's eyes, then before he could even react, he found himself being kissed.
