The town didn’t seem to be recovering from a massacre. Gem frowned, tightening her grip around the urgent summons in her fist and crumpling it more. The letter had arrived four days ago, dropped on her windowsill by a persistent raven that wouldn’t stop pecking the glass until she accepted it.
Attack on New Wakepine, a defenseless village.
Many wounded and killed in a brutal massacre.
Gold offered for dispatch of monster and services.
Map on back of letter. Make due haste, arrive by
the Harvest Moon. Lives are at stake.It wasn’t unusual for letters to arrive at her doorstep seeking out the aid of a monster slayer, but they usually had more information. However, Gem couldn’t afford to be picky at the moment. Monster hunting was a competitive market; the more experienced hunters received the vast majority of jobs, leaving newer slayers like herself to pick up the scraps they wouldn’t deign to accept. This letter had arrived while she was clearing out a rat infestation. Large rats, but still. A real monster would be a treat at this point.

Gem is a monster hunter on a quest to kill a werewolf, but she'll find it more difficult than she first imagined.

“It’s so strong,” Pyro said, his voice quivering on the words. “The smell of blood, I mean. I followed it here and now I’m up close and it’s just…”
Yeah, Pearl really should have known better. She was a walking vampire magnet. She was lucky it had taken this long for someone to find her. “I’m not hurt,” she told him. “Look, would it make you feel better if I let you have some?”

Pearl's on her period, and there are vampires in the woods. She may as well make the most of it.

Cleo takes a deep breath, stepping forward and placing her hand on Pearl’s waist.
When she meets her gaze, Cleo’s eyes are black.
“Pearl,” Cleo says, and their voice comes from down a long tunnel. “Look at me.”
All of the thoughts in Pearl’s mind, all the spinning, whirring, never ending fragments, they all stop. It’s a gentle thing, fading slowly into the background until all that is left is Cleo’s voice.
Look at me.
And oh, Pearl is looking. She’s never wanted to look at anything more in her life.

Pearl lets Cleo drink her blood. It has some emotional side effects that neither of them was quite expecting.
