“Excuse me. May I sit here?”

Al-Haitham looks up. He watches the student’s red eyes darken with recognition. Unfortunately, Al-Haitham recognizes him too.

“Would you leave if I said ‘no’?” Al-Haitham asks.

And just like that, the student is sliding into the seat, flipping up the desk and pulling his tablet out. He shoots Al-Haitham a glare just as the professor starts lecturing.

(Al-Haitham, Kaveh, and the three semesters in between.)

“Why is there a letter on the table?” Alhaitham asked.
Kaveh shrugged. “Why don’t you open it and find out?”
“You could’ve opened it yourself,” Alhaitham retorted, bringing the mug to his lips and sipping.
“It’s addressed to you.” Kaveh slid the envelope over to the Scribe. “It would be rude to open things that are not meant for me.”
“Not to mention illegal,” Alhaitham added as he grabbed it.
He tore the envelope and retrieved the letter inside, only to be met with a surprise.
You are invited to the wedding of Kaveh and Dunyarzad—
    What.

In which Kaveh is getting married and Alhaitham’s world falls apart.

“Because everything that came out of your mouth makes me wonder if you should’ve graduated from the Akademiya at all,” Tighnari says, pinching the bridge of his nose, and then he sighs. “Sorry, bad day. Not going to lie, you’re making it worse.”

    “I take offense to that.”

“Good. You should. Maybe it’ll make you think with your brain. I know you have a functioning one in there.”

“What does that mean,” Kaveh despairs. He didn’t come out just to get attacked?! “How does this relate to Alhaitham’s curse?!”

“It doesn’t,” Tighnari says flatly, “Because he doesn’t have one.”

    “Are you sure?”

“I am sure there is no curse out there that could make Alhaitham affectionate with someone he doesn’t like, or make him spend his money willingly on them. And I am surer by the second that I need to check your brain for defects. Now, please get me a drink.”

“She’s all alone, Haitham. She has no one to care for her, no home, and we don’t even know if the word on the back of her neck is her proper name.” He met Alhaitham’s eyes, his own wide with fear and uncertainty. “You gave me a home,” he spoke so quietly that Alhaitham strained to hear him, “Can’t we give her one too?”

"You don't have to sell it to me anymore," Alhaitham said. "I'm already here."

    "Good boy."

Alhaitham froze mid-step, the branches slipping from his hands and tumbling away from the pile he had been aiming for. For some inexplicable reason, the air felt suddenly warmer—and his pants uncomfortably tighter.

    What the—

    "…What?"

He turned toward Kaveh, his thoughts still caught on that peculiar choice of words—only to find him crouched beside the dog, scratching it between the ears as he retrieved a small piece of wood out of its mouth and added it to their growing pile.

    Oh.

    Or

A dog helped Alhaitham discover something interesting about himself.
