You were seven-years-old, and Mommy said that you were old enough to find your own food. Your stomach curled up inside of you when you looked at her fridge, when you saw her reaching into the tall cabinets to pull down chips, snack cakes, sodas. You would wrap your arms around your middle when you smelled the dinner she made for herself, and counted the change from your five dollar food allowance.
You were seven-years-old, and school had let out for the summer, so you weren’t getting breakfast and lunch five days a week anymore. So, the two of you spent most of your days in Wendy’s, and you spent most of your time hoping that there was enough for both of you.
Guy was four, which meant he would start Pre-K in August. You just had to make it to August
