    Summary

“In your opinion, Mr Rivia, is it true that Julian Alfred Pankratz is the best goalkeeper in the world at the moment?” the reporter asks him, smiling as though she’s in on the joke.

“Jaskier isn’t even the best keeper in Arsenal,” Geralt replies, deadpan.

Pankratz's transfer deal from Arsenal to Kaer Morhen Football Club is finalised the very next day.

Geralt is a simple man with simple desires: he wants to play football and get paid for it. He does not want to be photographed while out for a jog, or have his anatomy debated on morning TV, or play any part in his idiot teammate Jaskier's scheme to expose an ex-friend for leaking stories about him to the tabloid newspapers.

    Funny how things work out.

    Summary

"If life could give you one blessing-” He knows, whatever the next words are, he will not be prepared for them; he is not prepared even though he knows not what the next words are. Please-

    “-it would be me.”

The back of his eyelids burn dryly.

Geralt’s shaking hands are fisted in the front of the bard’s green doublet so tightly his fingers bruise his palms through the fabric. It quite effectively prevents the next lyric from being belted out. The tavern is dead silent and static other than the dozens of pounding heartbeats exacerbating his migraine as the witcher snarls, the acrid stench of fear wafting into his nose. “Where did you hear that song?”

He needs to know, because there is a ghost. A ghost of Jaskier that never leaves. The brilliant blue of his doublet in the corner of the tavern bleaches Geralt’s retinas like drinking Cat in the middle of the day.

    "Where?"

Or; Jaskier doesn't come back but Geralt doesn't stop waiting for him. A child surprise is acquired amidst the grieving and curses.

    Summary

Winter explains to Jaskier how seeing his heartbreak makes Winter so incredibly sad that they wanted to do something for the boy. Jaskier asks them what it is and tilts his head curiously, so exactly like Summer does that it makes Winter laugh, and Winter presents him with a key.

“It is a key to your heart, Jaskier,” Winter says seriously, “I am so very saddened by how much heartbreak you experience, I thought I might give you a way to avoid it in the future.”

    Summary

Even as the weeks passed and the initial shock of the mountain dismissal began to dull, he’d reopen his wounds anew each day. He’d turn to tell Geralt a funny anecdote, or he’d ask the barmaid for an apple with his dinner before remembering that there was no horse to sneak it to. The pain he’d felt as a child was massive and overwhelming and horrific, but it was contained to that moment in time. This heartbreak, this agony was always fresh. It flayed him open every day, in ways both expected and unexpected, and there was nothing he could do to escape it. It was death by a thousand cuts, except he didn’t die.

So when he cleared his throat between songs in some tavern in Murivel and felt something fly up into his mouth, then spat a tiny golden petal into his palm, he couldn’t help but laugh. He laughed long and hard, tears gathering at the corners of his eyes. He finally calmed himself enough to catch his breath, let the petal fall to the floor, and continued his set.
