Summary
On the eve of the Trial of Seven at Ashford, Ser Duncan the Tall and Lord Lyonel share one stolen, tender night.The trial leaves blood on the ground and grief in Duncan’s heart. When Lyonel, shaken and newly aware of how easily he might lose him, begs Duncan to come to Storm’s End, Duncan refuses. Loss weighs too heavily, and pride keeps him moving. A hedge knight does not cling to a lord’s hall, no matter how fiercely he is loved.
So Duncan rides on.
But months along the Kingsroad to Dorne, something is not right. The smell of ale turns his stomach. Campfire stew makes him pale. What he first dismisses as illness begins to whisper another truth, one that ties him to Storm’s End more surely than any vow.
