Nene could remember the first time she had seen her mother’s flower.
She thought it might have been spring and it was in full bloom across her back, the soft, butter yellow petals a stark contrast against her mother’s tanned skin. Her mother must have felt her young eyes (only six at the time) on it because she turned and scooped her up. Hot steam clung to Nene’s skin and made contact with her mother’s, tacky and just shy of uncomfortable.
She didn’t pull away, though, too excited to just be close to her. The faucet of their bathtub dripped rhythmically in the bathroom air, reverberating off shiny, expensive white tile.
(The large, round bathtub in this condo had been something that Nene had been so excited about. Distantly, she wondered if her mother picked this particular condo based just on that alone.)
“Its a daffodil,” her mother had whispered into her soft, dark baby hair. “It only blooms sometimes.”
It was the first time and the last time Nene saw it.
