You know what to do by now when a man falls. You are not a doctor, merely someone who stepped in to help when an extra set of hands were needed, but the circumstances care not for formal training and as it goes you are who they go to when someone collapses. And they do collapse. It is a daily thing at this point. If there is some small mercy in watching your friends, acquaintances, and even captain collapse, it is that you have plenty of practice of what to do when the next one goes.

The day is bright, sunny, and warm. In hindsight you think you should have seen it coming. You remember that day all those years ago when the too bright sun had beamed down like an omen of the tragedy the day would bring, but things are different now. The tragedy never happened and you had no reason to find anything but enjoyment in the warmth that day’s sun brought.

Somewhere soft and somewhat familiar is the most enticing thing Michael can possibly conjure up right now. Somewhere comforting to lie down while his life washes away from him.
