    Summary

The unfamiliar place caused Shane’s breathing to quicken.
What did he do last night? They weren’t due in Florida until tomorrow. He hadn’t gone out last night and he didn’t drink so why would he be in a random hotel room by himself?
Shane immediately got up and almost tripped on a shoe that was laying carelessly on the ground. He was wearing nothing but boxers and he was sweating like someone had cranked up the heater. Montreal was cold but not cold enough to put the heat on fucking 80 degrees.

He pulled the blinds open and his eyes widened when he noticed how bright outside was. He didn’t recognize the streets or the buildings and he most certainly didn’t recognize the hotel room he was in.

    Summary

Later, he’ll blame it all on a momentary lapse of judgement.

He’ll blame it on the loneliness maybe—on the fact that, despite never having been physically closer to Shane this consistently in his entire life—that despite regularly getting dinner with Shane’s parents—that despite finally having found what he’d spend his entire life searching for he’s also, somehow, never felt more alone.

He’ll blame it on Cliff not texting him back since he’d signed with Ottawa. He’ll blame it on Sveta, face pulled into a perpetual frown during every facetime call.

Or maybe he’ll blame it on Anya—sweet, beautiful Anya—who’d been just a little too cute not to share.

    Summary

Starts after chapter 22 of 'The long game'.

Ilya asks Shane to choose between him and hockey.
Shane takes a moment to think about it, and says 'of course I choose you'.

Taking the moment to think about it? It doesn't sit right with Ilya when Ilya feels like he left the Boston team to be closer to Shane. What did Shane sacrifice?

It didn't end there, Shane asks him, 'Would you?' To Shane, they didn't plan this. They decided to see other, get retired and then tell everyone. Shane started the charity in the name of Ilya's mother, so they can meet other in public. He doesn't like socializing with people, but he met with donors, managed everything except coaching which he realised he is not good at it. Everything was going as planned right? When did things change? Ilya is not asking to leave Montreal but hockey. Hockey is where Shane feels normal, with no subject he needs to try hard to understand. He feels normal in the rink.

    Summary

Shane Hollander isn’t good at understanding the unsaid, but 6 months of silence interrupted by the reminder he’s nothing but boring and fucking annoying is pretty easy to interpret.

It’s over. He lets Ilya have him. Fuck him. And it was fun, and now it’s done. He’s lost the appeal when he gave it up. Message received, the player is done chasing.

    He’s going to throw up.

    ______

Ilya Rozanov and his avoidant technique of “if I don’t touch or say anything, then I can’t make it worse” is used on a spiralling, self-deprecating, repressed homosexual overthinker with anxiety. It does make it worse.
