    Summary

“Just go already,” Diotima says, shooing him in and swinging the door shut. When he rolls down the window, she rolls her eyes. “Don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine. After you graduate, you can come back with that knowledge from the devil and tell me all about it.”

He laughs at that. If it comes out a little flat, neither of them mentions it.

He has one suitcase, one backpack, and the clothes on his back. There's still room for one more in the back seat.

“I’ll write,” Anaxa promises, leaning toward the open window as the driver shifts the car into gear. He doesn’t know how, but he’ll find a way.

    Diotima only smiles and waves.

    Chapter 6: It's a... Deal?

“You wound me, mer.” Aventurine breathes an exaggerated sigh and leans so close that only the glass separates them. His nose almost touches it; Ratio can see fog form where his breath hits the pane. “Say, Ratio—would you like a better opportunity to study humans?”

Ratio recoils an inch. “I’m not drowning anyone.”

Aventurine blinks, all faux innocence. “Whatever makes you think I was going to suggest that?”

    Or:

Ratio realizes a bit too late that humans are not the only danger he should be wary of. (Merman!Ratio meets Fae!Aventurine)

It takes him longer than he’d like to realize, no, he’s not dreaming—he is in the middle of the woods, those are runes etched into the dirt beneath him, and yes, he is tied up like some sacrificial offering at the center of a ritual circle.

It's times like these when he misses the desert.

    Summary

The first time they meet, Aventurine sees the mark before he sees Ratio’s face. Eighteen elegant words scrawled in bold, black ink tracing the curve of Ratio's exposed deltoid like an invitation. Who is Aventurine to not take the obvious bait?

“‘Does the conscious act of reading another's soulmark constitute as a defiance of fate or alignment with it?’” he reads aloud, lips twitching into a half-smile. “How befitting of a renowned scholar such as yourself. It’s very… unique.”

Whatever Aventurine said seems to pass some unspoken test, because Ratio reaches up and removes his headpiece. "A paradox, self-contained and self-contradictory. One worth contemplation, wouldn’t you agree?" Ratio’s eyes, a brilliant shade of rusty gold, catch the light as he inclines his elegant head and extends his hand. "I am Veritas Ratio."

“Aventurine of the Stratagems,” Aventurine answers, flashing a polished, professional smile as their hands clasp in a firm shake. “A pleasure to meet your acquaintance.”

    Summary

Aventurine awakens with a jerk of his reconstructed jaw. Gold-brown metal gleams where synthetic skin once stretched. His lips twitch experimentally and his eyes are still so, damningly red but they refocus on Ratio and Aventurine's back online again.

Ratio knows Aventurine won't like this—knows it in the marrow of his weary bones—but still, the apology stumbles from his lips like a child unsure of its first steps. “I’m sorry,” he murmurs, and in this moment, Ratio feels the true beginning of the end.

Aventurine simply tilts his head with the inevitability of a conclusion. His voice, when it comes, is calm, devoid of accusation. “Sunday won’t let me stay, will he?”

    It isn’t a question.

    Or:

Ratio rebuilds Aventurine again. And again. And again.

    Summary

Aventurine nods, curiously waiting for Ratio to elaborate. Is Ratio planning to read to him? That is the sort of activity Ratio would consider leisurely, albeit rather mundane. Still, Aventurine muses, Ratio does have a pleasant voice, so it wouldn't be so bad.

With a determined nod, Ratio extends his hand expectantly, the other hovering over the book he had placed on the ladder earlier. After a moment's hesitation, Aventurine accepts.

As Ratio's hand touches the book, Aventurine feels a sudden lurch, and that's all the warning he gets before they're falling.

    Summary

“So, you’re the grim reaper,” someone drawls, as Ratio reaches for a soul caught amid a storm of broken glass and blood. He turns to find a blonde man leaning against a graffitied wall, arms crossed and dark sunglasses masking his gaze. The man raises a brow. “Tough guy to find.”

“I imagine much of the human populace hardly wants to find me,” Ratio remarks dryly. He considers the newcomer's bruised knuckles and casual stance. So, this must be the assailant.

The man’s lips curve up, shades tilting down to reveal a glint of pink and blue. “I’m not most people.”

    Summary

As a doctor, Ratio had always approached death clinically. He’d seen it peaceful, violent, and everything in between. But now that his own death is approaching, detachment seems impossible. He’d watched families cling to loved ones and seen how patients lingered in the presence of their friends. Ratio understands now why they couldn’t let go.

They reach the lake. If Aventurine’s hands tremble as they row, Ratio pretends it's from exertion.

What does death feel like? His answer to that question would be his greatest and final hypothesis.

    (Ratio doesn’t know.)

    Summary

Upon entering, he approached V3R1T45R4T10 with urgency and asked, “Do you recognize me?”

V3R1T45R4T10 initiated an internal processing sequence, analyzing visual and textual data before responding with clinical precision: “Affirmation: You are Director Aventurine, Senior Manager of the Strategic Investment Department at the IPC and one of the Ten Stonehearts, possessing the ‘aventurine of stratagems’ Cornerstone. The database reports that you are the last Avgin and a former slave.”

The response elicited a rapid change in Director Aventurine’s expression. His features flattened, lips falling to form a thin, straight line. His face became still, yet his left hand exhibited a slight twitching motion. The abrupt shift in demeanor culminated in a hollow smile that wobbled at the edges.

"I see," Director Aventurine stiffly stated before turning and leaving the room.

"KV-0506A, do you copy?" Ratio's voice cuts through the silence when Aventurine doesn't respond.

Aventurine's words catch in his throat. He exhales slowly, anchoring himself with the pain radiating from his ribs.

"VP-0841R," he murmurs, collapsing onto the floor and covering his eyes with his uninjured arm to shield them from the flashing lights. "I copy."

Despite everything, a faint smile tugs at the corners of his lips.

    Summary

Three sharp knocks punctuate the pitter-patter of the rain outside. Strange. Ratio isn’t expecting any deliveries or guests at this hour. He peers through the peephole and freezes.

Three long years after his disappearance in Penacony, Aventurine stands at Ratio’s doorstep with a casual, lopsided grin.

    Unthinkable. Unbelievable. Unimaginable.

Numb fingers open the door before caution can intervene. Aventurine, the eternal outlier, opens his mouth.

“Schrödinger looked in the box; I live.”

Without fail, Ratio finds him after every project, at every bar and casino. He drags Aventurine back to his hotel or penthouse, plying him with water and food until Aventurine is almost eating three meals a day.

Each night, Aventurine is lulled to sleep by Ratio’s irritated scolding, and every morning, he wakes to a tall glass of water and hangover pills on his nightstand, with breakfast pre-made and waiting in the fridge.

One night, after Ratio leaves, Aventurine coughs. It must be allergies.

Aventurine runs his left hand through his hair in a futile attempt to calm his nerves, pacing back and forth in agitation. "But this is a hotel, and a high-end one at that. People pay to sleep here. Why would they jeopardize their reputation by offering a haunted hotel? It's absurd."

Ratio finally releases the door handle and starts descending the stairs. "If you have any complaints, you can take them up with management," Ratio suggests as he waits for Aventurine to follow.

    Aventurine huffs. "Maybe I will."
