Summary
The year is 1984; After Ted Wheeler dies because of some stupid lab accident at his annoying government job in Hawkins, Indiana, Thirteen-year-old Mike and his family are forced to move there and stay at some lousy trailer park because 1.) moving there was the closest thing they had to still being with him, not that Mike really cared, 2.) it was the cheapest place his mom could afford when you’re in charge of a family of four with no man in the house, and 3.) because Mike had kinda maybe sorta did something really, really bad to another boy at school that unfortunately just lined up with the time him and his family had to move so… nothing important really.

“No. No, that can’t be right.”
“You don’t know anything about yourself, why is this so hard to believe?”
“Because I’m gay.”
Will freezes.
Mike is confused. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He barely knows his own name.
“Mike, you’re not gay.”

“I, um, did some reading. Marie Antoinette was a queen, and… and they said she was really pretty. With her white hair. I meant it, too. When I said you were pretty.”
Rosy spots had blossomed on Will’s cheeks, his eyes widening as they darted over Mike’s face, searching for something.
Summer brings buds of flowers and a blooming romance.

Summary
Maybe he deserves this. Penance for years of locking lips to prove how totally straight he was instead of asking her if she had any, like, hobbies or whatever… It can’t be as bad as the time he joined her and Hopper on a hike and nearly died of dehydration (true story), so Mike reluctantly agreed. Even if the idea of it made his heart race, just a bit.
“It will be fun, I promise,” El had said as she dragged him over to the window for better lighting, pushing Mike into her desk chair. She started arming herself with pencils and compacts and brushes while Mike fidgeted in his seat.
“Fun, yeah,” he had croaked as she pinned his bangs out of the way. Maybe this won’t be so bad - it’s only blush and lip gloss, right?
Or: Mike gets a makeover and has a lot of feelings about it. El helps him through it

Summary
Mike is ten when Mom, breath heavy with wine, sits on his bed in the middle of the night. Her hair is flat. Her eyes are red. Her hands are trembling. She slurs when she speaks, and Mike knows he'll never forget what she tells him that night. Mike knows it to be true, because it makes everything click. He is not Ted Wheeler's son. The next morning, Mom will wake up and have forgotten the whole incident.
Mike wishes he could.
