Summary
Jackie reaches over and pokes her finger gently between Shauna’s eyebrows.
Shauna swats her hand away without looking up. “Stop it.”
“You’re frowning,” Jackie says, a teasing lilt in her voice. “I don’t like it when you frown.”
“I don’t like it when you poke my face.”
“Compromise: you smile more, I poke less.”
Jackie sees the twitch at the corner of Shauna's mouth.
With a dramatic sigh, Jackie rolls onto her back and lets her head fall against Shauna’s shoulder. The contact was easy, instinctual. Like breathing. Like home.
Shauna doesn't move away and Jackie smiles.

The memory plays on loop some nights when Jackie can’t sleep. That afternoon. That sun-drenched quiet. That shoulder she used to lean on like it would always be there.
She doesn’t know when things changed. When Shauna started pulling away. When her words stopped being soft and started cutting. When she stopped laughing at Jackie’s jokes, stopped meeting her eyes, stopped letting her in.

"Just hold me." I whisper quietly clinging tightly, as a single tear rolls down my face. Hope doesn't reciprocate the hug, her arms never leaving her side. She can probably hear my hitched breathing, as well as my broken beating heart, and still she does nothing.
Hope doesn't even kill me.

Just when she starts to believe that maybe she has a chance at a normal life, she's thrown into yet another nightmare. After all of the crap the universe had thrown at her, she really should have known better than to relax all of the safety measures.
