Indy had told him all about America during those long, hot days as they made their way to Delhi, spinning stories of his youth in New Jersey and New Mexico to Shorty on the voyage across the Pacific and during the plane ride from Chicago to Connecticut. Indy had promised him all sorts of adventures in America. Hot dogs and ice cream; fishing trips and camping. And baseball.

It's been a couple of weeks since Indiana convinced the pickpocket who'd attempted to steal his wallet to work for him rather than against him. It's like coaxing a stray cat into the house- two parts spoiling him with food and shelter, and one part making it clear there are rules inside a house that must be followed, regardless of whether those same rules apply outside the house.
He'd never considered himself a candidate for parenting- not once in his life!- but he's apparently all the kid has. And that steels his resolve to do right by the kid, even if it's risky and complicated.

“Can you get me some weed?” She asks, and to his credit, Tommy just raises his eyebrows. “Or some vodka, I think, but weed, preferably.”
Tommy takes a deep breath, and afraid of a no, she speaks again.
“Not a lot!” She reassures him. “Just like-” She gestures with her hands to indicate the amount she saw someone else carrying to Gail’s house when she was spying to get some intel earlier. “Like that much.” She might need more later, but if the lady’s studied how to fix brains, surely she’ll be able to do it pretty quickly. Ellie might be fucked up more than other kids her age, but she can’t be the most fucked up person in Jackson. Just statistically, other people have had more time to get more fucked up. She’s probably barely even fucked up, comparatively. Freaked up, really, if anything.
That’s what she’s been desperately telling herself, at least.

It’s not that Ellie means to stalk the couple she catches lurking in the shadows at 1 in the morning after sneaking out of her dorm because sitting in the room alone was making it hard to breathe, but fellow curfew-breakers can hardly expect privacy. All’s fair in love and rule-breaking or whatever their English teacher said in one of the rare classes when they were learning something not related to FEDRA policy.
And there’s something in the way the man holds his hand out to help pull the woman up over a crumbled brick wall that she just can’t look away from.
There’s a gentleness there despite his size and obvious strength that makes her breath catch for just a second. It’s too far for her to hear what they’re saying, but the woman says something with a little half-smile and presses her hand to the man’s shoulder, and the casual affection of the gesture fills her with a nameless want.
So, trailing them at a distance it is.
(AU in which Ellie follows Joel and Tess around and meets them with no Fireflies involved)

In his many years of taking on jobs for too-little pay, there’s one assignment he’s never worked. The other workers call it the “preschool brigade,” the FEDRA-school kids sent out into the field for what they call “work experience” to get them used to the real world. Really, it’s a behavioral tool, he knows, an example of “better act right or you’ll end up like these poor fuckers when you’re grown.”
He's deliberately never worked on one, uninterested in being put in charge of a kid doing a dangerous job they shouldn’t be. The kids that get sent on the preschool brigade are the ones FEDRA doesn’t necessarily care about getting back, after all, and there are things even adults shouldn’t be doing, not as untrained as most of them are.
And then comes the day one of the FEDRA guards assigned to his work detail that leads over a sullen-looking girl, who kicks rocks the entire way.
