Summary
Laudna is a children's librarian who loves doing story time, but unfortunately the kids find her more scary-scary than fun-scary. So it's very rare for her to be able to do that.
Imogen runs an outdoor school where schools in Jrusar send grades of children to learn about nature and get some learning done outside of a traditional classroom. Finding someone to lead a story time with the kids has been a bit difficult, so Imogen reaches out to the local public library.
This is a modern AU, so they don't have magic per se. This is generally going to be from Laudna's perspective, with a lil Imogen sprinkled in for flavour. I'll add more tags and characters as they become relevant.

“It's not even a thought, Laudna. I'd trade my life for yours in a heartbeat."
Laudna grabs her hands and guides her to bed. Imogen follows dutifully. "Then I'll take you up on that. I need you, my dear." Her voice is sweet and pleasant. "More than you know."
Imogen lays wrapped in Laudna’s embrace in a bed that feels more comfortable than she’s used to. The exhaustion comes instantly. She sleeps.
She sleeps and she dreams.

A thin veil exists between dreams and reality. Laudna's resurrection sparks wonderful and unforeseen repercussions which blur that veil. One of which severs an old tether and fosters a new one. It’s Laudna’s turn to have the corner of her mouth curl and quirk. “But hasn’t it already?” she asks, fingers reaching out and tangling with Imogen’s.
“Is that a bad thing?” Imogen’s voice pitches low, and Laudna feels something pulling, settling, low within her in turn.
Laudna shakes her head, mouth dry and voice gone. Imogen speaks for her.
“Kiss me,” she says. Asks. Pleads.
It’s too much, and Laudna has never been good at denying anything that Imogen wants.
Imogen tastes like oranges.

Summary
She and Imogen fluttered about the house together, knocking elbows and hips, spending easy hours luxuriating in the blanketing peace of knowing this - this house, this life, these hands together - was theirs to keep. Laudna basked in getting to spend time arranging the place just so, knowing they would be staying, knowing she could take her time finding the right places for things without having to worry about strategizing exit routes.
The problems of the children of Drear could get the same treatment - the right solutions, well considered. There was no need to rush. They weren’t going anywhere.
After everything, Imogen and Laudna get their home, and the town of Drear gets a dose of magic mending.

Summary
It's almost lonely, this new calm in Imogen's head. Usually at the market she'd be treated to Laudna's light, musical inner dialogue about the ripeness of fruits or the bread Zhudanna might like best, but instead it's just quiet. All Imogen gets is what Laudna shows on her face, and the words she says out loud. Words like you don't have to listen in to get my thoughts. I'll always share them willingly. You can just ask.
There's only one thing Imogen wants to ask right now. It's blaring in Imogen's mind like a temple bell, so loudly that even with the circlet she's sure Laudna must be able to hear it. And Laudna is looking at her so sweetly. Every moment they've been parted has made this all-consuming feeling worse, harder to pack away, and this could be her last chance to say it. Her only chance.
She has to say it. She has to ask.
