“I’m offended by the implication,” he said, hand to his chest. “This is a completely respectable errand with very innocent intentions involving federal property after hours.”
“Daniel,” she warned with an exasperated chuckle.
He smiled at her, unbothered. “Hey, if it helps, I promise you plausible deniability.”

They hadn’t spoken since Wednesday night. The night she’d shown up at his apartment without a plan. The night she’d needed to feel anything other than grief.
