Summary
Mary Winchester died that night in the fire. So did her sons. Or so, the world, Heaven, and Hell all believed. The intended vessels for Michael and Lucifer were gone; their souls taken to the protected place for children where not even archangels could tread.
And so the timeline for Armageddon was set back, delayed, for who knows how many centuries. The deaths of Dean and Sam Winchester had bought the earth more time, though no one knew it. They were freed from the life they would have led, though no one knew it.

"She's fine but she's working a shifter case she needs our help on," Dean said, easing Sam's nerves somewhat.
"Okay, so you go," Sam replied, nodding lightly.
Dean shook his head. "She sounded like she needed research help too, Sam. She asked after both of us."
"We have a six month old and a teenager that needs to go to school," Sam protested immediately, careful not to raise his voice too much with said six months old in the same room. "Not to mention a dog that needs to be taken care of."
