Summary
“He’s going to die, you know,” Eblana observes. Her voice is cold with honesty. Not cruelty. A lot of people hear one as the other when she speaks, but Loughshinny, at least, should know better. Eblana is always trying to be honest. She never has to try to be cruel. “There’s no meaning in soothing a corpse.”
“He will,” Loughshinny agrees. Eblana hadn’t been sure if she would. Her sister has always had a habit of trying to deny reality, no matter how much Eblana has tried to shake it from her. First it was out of fear. Then it was out of hope. But it seems even hope is not enough to blind her here, in this nameless Ursus house over the body of this nameless Ursus man. “I want to help him anyway.”
(Years after the Red Dragon sacrifices herself for Tara, two Rhodes Island Operators who swore only to meet where death descends have a conversation over a corpse. How strange, then, that they end up talking about life instead.)

Summary
“Federico,” Oren says, leaning up against the stone archway as he watches Federico fold a series of dusty, once-white blankets, “why did you shoot Arturia Giallo, if you knew it wouldn’t do anything?”
“It was a warning.” His voice is low, clipped, but not in frustration—it’s just how he speaks.
Oren raises a thick eyebrow. “A warning? A six-inch shell to the skull is a hell of a way to give a warning.”
“Yes,” Federico says, and does not elaborate.
Federico, Oren, and what might possess a man to try and shoot his sister in the head.

Summary
“Hey, Aqua,” she said after a strangely comfortable silence, “we really are both liars, aren’t we?”
“I guess we are,” he said. Ruby had named him well, back when he’d sprung their story to save Kana’s. “I’m sorry you had to be.”
This time, he was telling the truth.
Akane took a deep breath, let it out so slowly that it didn’t even disturb the long strands of hair that had crept their way onto her nose, and spoke. “And if I asked you to take responsibility for it, what would you do?”
Kurokawa Akane, Hoshino Aquamarine, and the shadow of Arima Kana. Post-canon.

Summary
When Maria made it back from the showers, Platinum was in her bed.
She looked quite at home there, posed carelessly across Maria’s neatly-made sheets, a splash of snow across gunmetal-grey covers. Her body—every last distracting inch of it—was artfully concealed, by which Maria meant the art was in how little actually was concealed, in a pale blue transparent chemise cut terribly short and a pair of frilly white panties. That was it. The only other thing she had on her was one of Maria’s historical novels, which she was apparently entirely engrossed in reading, her eyes intent on the page she’d just turned instead of Maria standing in the doorway.

Summary
Kokomi looked back up at Baal, then. Not helplessly. Not desperately. Just—openly, with nothing on her face, no smile on her lips, no shadow in her eyes.
Just a girl, looking at a god, her heart rattling on the inside of her chest.
“Please,” she said again, “don’t make this hard for me.”
(At the culmination of peace negotiations between Watatsumi and the Shogunate, Sangonomiya Kokomi offers Raiden Ei a deal: she will sign away two thousand years of hatred between their people… if Ei hands over the Puppet Shogun in exchange for the murder of Orobaxi.
It’s a deal that may be more selfish than Kokomi is willing to admit.)

Summary
"That sounds sad," Maria said, with that odd mixture of earnest naivety and worldly insight that so often caught Platinum flat-footed. She could never quite tell which jokes would land and which jokes Maria would realise might not have been jokes at all. "Never being able to tell people how you really feel would be awful."
It was. But so was dying, or not having enough money to buy proper shampoo. Platinum preferred to avoid both, so c’est la vie as the Vouivre might declare.
Instead of saying any of that, though, she said, "It's not all bad. I get free drinks at the bar and my own crater in your bed. A girl can deal."

Summary
Baal’s face twisted—by her usual standards, which meant a single flicker of her eyebrows and a slight narrowing of her eyes—in frustration. “I would not expect you to understand.”
“No, you wouldn’t,” Kokomi said, settling her head into the pillow of Baal’s thigh with another sigh. “You never expect people to understand. Only to do. I thought it was a charming character flaw until I met Raiden Ei, and then I realised it was just proof she did have a hand in making you.”
(Baal rebels against Ei. Baal loses. Baal is held beneath the palace until Ei can figure out how to disassemble her own tamper-proof eight-foot tall jacked warform. In the meantime, Kokomi visits. They have a lot of sex and a little conversation.)

Summary
There’s something more than Mei’s sweet, flowery perfume in the air. There must be. Something even a MANTIS can’t shrug off.
That’s the only possible explanation for the heavy anticipation that frames Fu Hua’s thoughts, the soft, squirming heat that fills her the longer she holds Kiana close, the devastating fragility of Mei’s sunset eyes tracing her jawline, and above it all—
Above it all—
The horrible, horrible feeling—
—that nothing is going to go wrong.

Summary
They put a bomb in her, once. Right above the heart. Mei thinks she loves Kiana a little like that—like somebody’s cut her ribcage open and shoved in the seed of her own self-destruction, jagged in her chest.
But Raiden Mei chose the bomb, if it meant she’d never become the Herrscher of Thunder. Her life was an easy trade for the sake of the world.
What, then, does it say that she chose the Herrscher of Thunder for the sake of Kiana Kaslana?

Summary
"No, Kiana," said Theresa, pointing the kiddie-stool up at her, "you know the rules. The kitchen is out-of-bounds to House Kaslana on pain of homework." Kiana shuddered as if struck.
