Jazz should have waited. He should have retreated and called for back-up. He should have left Prowl alone to hide behind his rocks and lick his wounds.
But this was Prowl.
His Prowler.
He'd come back from the grave.

After an operation goes horribly wrong and Prowl is presumed killed in action, Jazz begins to slowly, reluctantly move on with his life.
On a routine recon mission, Jazz comes across the very mech he's spent ages trying to mourn. Yet, Prowl is different. He doesn't speak. He doesn't question. All he does is hiss and growl and stare, cautiously, as Jazz tries to bring the Prowl he knows and loves back to him.
AKA: A stranger comes home wearing your dead best friend's face.

So the mission went wrong. Jazz wasn't too worried about it; after all, he was alive, he'd gotten the information he'd been after, and Prowl had been prompt as always when he'd needed a fast exit. All they had to do now was make it back to the other Autobots in one piece. That was the easy part, right?
OR
Jazz and Prowl get stranded on a moon in the middle of a remote star system, because nothing is ever that easy.

“I’m just making sure your head is in this youngling,” and the confusion slips through into his field. Kup hasn’t called him that in countless solar cycles. Kup turns his optics onto Springer, “I’m making sure you ain’t going into this with a bloated processor and a clouded idea of what you’re working with.”
Springer stares back into his optics. He inhales slowly before asking, “And what is your diagnosis, captain?”
Kup smirks at him, taking the cigar out of his mouth, “All I can see is a mech who has this planned out and seemingly knows what his team is doing. I see you’re prepared, Springer. I wanted you to know that.”
Springer feels like his processor is about to fry itself. This whole back and forth has been an appraisal?
“I think I may feel proud of you Springer,” Kup smirks as he says it, “and I know your creator would be if he saw you know. You got your head on straight in the face of your first mission in charge and by Primus you’re confident in your squad”

“Jazz, can I tell you something,” his voice uncharacteristically soft.
“Anything, Prowler.”
He pierces his lips, optics hardening, “You have to promise not to tell anyone. It’s a secret I hold close to my spark.” There’s a tightening forming in his spark chamber as he speaks.
Jazz shifts slightly, pulling back to give Prowl space, “Now you’re starting to scare me. What’s the matter?”
His lips twitch into a smile before Prowl schools his face back to a practice neutral. He wishes Jazz didn’t pull away. “Before the war went into full swing, while tensions were still rising and well before Vos or Nyon or Praxius fell,” he pauses. Prowls eyes remain on Jazz’s visor, optics searching. He’s met with a warm field wrapping around his own, that ache in his spark easing slightly. “Well, I had a sparkling.”

Summary
Waking up in a place he didn’t recognise with injuries he doesn't recall, Jazz already knew he was in it for the long run. At the very least, he knew these fundamental rules:
He was Jazz, he was an Autobot, and Optimus Prime was his leader.
Now, he just wished he could figure out who Optimus Prime was supposed to be.
Alternatively, Jazz wakes up with no memory of who he is, and decides that instead of coming clean about it, he's going to pretend he didn't have amnesia in the first place. This can only go well.

Summary
Cybertron has been under the rule of the Primes since time-immemorial. The position has always been passed from creator to creation, ensuring a continuous semi-divine lineage. Until the day that Orion Pax is chosen by the Matrix of Leadership to be its next bearer. From one cycle to the next, a new dynasty is declared to be ruling Cybertron, and Optimus Prime is hailed as their new supreme ruler.
Orion has never been blind to how their society's caste system can often cause more harm than good. He'd hoped to be able to change things with his newfound power, but quickly realizes that the Senate and the priests hold much more sway over his life than he'd expected. There's also whatever is happening with his consorts, who act like their new life is anything but wanted.

Primes traditionally have harems composed of bots from the high-castes of various city states, called their consorts. Allegedly, this is a very desirable position - a cushy life with no worries, their only duty continuing the Prime's lineage. What the people of Cybertron don't know is that the position of consort is more akin to that of a hostage than a real partner. Optimus Prime is also unaware. His consorts are not.
