“Usually you would just ask,” John observed, taking a drink and putting down the glass on the counter, looking a bit more awake. This was hopefully his way of granting Sherlock permission.
“Are you…” Sherlock began, pausing as if he hadn’t practiced this question over a thousand times in his mind over the last hour, “Do you still wish to move out?”
~~~Quick fix-it for Musgrave part 1, because I wanted to see more resolution to their fight.

Sherlock's been away for an awful 2 years, getting rid of the rest of Moriarty's web. With one thread remaining, he's back in London and looking forward to reuniting with the others. However, John's reaction to seeing him in the flat isn't one he ever expected.

Summary
To die without dying, one must give up their life for a long period of time. For Sherlock Holmes, it was necessary to sacrifice himself for 2 whole years. The spider was long gone, but it's web still remains-- ensnaring the innocents unfortunate enough to fly into it's path. Innocents that Sherlock vowed to protect.
But to stay alive without a life of your own is quite a task on it's own-- from the moment he'd escaped the falls it'd been a cold, heartless existence which the detective trekked through, all violently fixated on one point, each step a careful calculation. He couldn't allow himself to feel, to worry, to wonder-- to be weak in situation requiring as much care as this- it couldn't happen. It would *ruin* him, and everything he loved.
There were very few moments when his heart and mind fell away from the clinical precision of the task at hand. Very few.
But not none.
