“Doc said to let you know that your blood results all look good, but we’re still waiting on word for your shoulder, but we don’t think it’s a break,” she tells him, and he breathes a sigh of relief. She flips to the next page. “And I know you’re probably more worried about it than you’re letting on, but don’t worry. Your baby is fine. Pup is in tip-top shape.”
Eddie’s entire world comes to a halt.
“Sorry, what?”
Her hands pause on the forms, eyes drifting upward, almost comically slow to meet his. “Which part are you confused about?” She asks, tentatively.
Jesus Christ. His entire body suddenly feels aflame, the aching pains long forgotten, the scrapes all along the side of his face no longer even stinging. He sits up far too quickly, glancing down at where they’d drawn the blood from him before looking back over at her.
“Pup?”
Her face goes pale. “Oh.”
“Pup?” He repeats, voice pitching higher.

Summary
Buck blinks hard, but the scene in front of him doesn’t change.
There’s a new soft swell to Eddie’s stomach, still small but large enough that it must take some effort to hide it under his clothes. His hand is resting there, almost cradling it, and Buck is transfixed.
He drags in a ragged breath. It could be nothing. Maybe Eddie had an abnormally large lunch, or maybe he gained a few pounds from the more sedentary work he did in El Paso. Either could be a reasonable explanation for the change in Eddie’s body.
But Buck also remembers the secret Eddie whispered to him here in this room, in the dim light of the early morning. With their bodies still tangled together, Eddie’s face had gone tight and cautious as he apologized for not telling Buck sooner that he was a carrier — information that had been largely irrelevant in his life before that moment.
