“You know I’ve been sitting with the council more often since Father passed,” he said. “There’s been talk that I should remarry.”

His mother’s hand paused over her tea. “So soon?”

“They think heirs can’t wait,” Valarr said. “The matter came up again at the last meetings. Several names were discussed.” His eyes flicked toward Naerys. “Naery’s was the one most in favor.”

The room fell quiet. Lady Aelinor looked from him to her daughter. “The council?” she said slowly. “They suggested Naerys?”

    “Yes.”

Naerys folded her hands neatly in her lap. Her voice, when it came, was even. “If the council believes it proper, and His Grace agrees, then I’ll do my duty. If my cousin thinks me suitable, who am I to refuse?”

Color rose in Lady Aelinor’s cheeks. “That’s sudden news,” she admitted.

His mother drew a calm breath. “If both of you are willing, then there’s little left for parents to say. It keeps the line strong indeed. Baelor would have seen the reason in it.”

This is the story of a king and queen growing into their crowns together, navigating expectation, and legacy—and building, along the way, a bond they both wished for from the start.

"You're quite remarkable," Aerion pronounced, with the air of one bestowing a lesser soul their highest due. "Your lips are plush for a woman of—here. Are you from here? Tell me, did your wet nurse overfeed you as a babe?"

He slid a finger along the meat of her cheek, then tapped the corner of her mouth. The gesture was neither tender nor cruel, but exploratory, as if he sought the answers of her face in the texture of her flesh.

"So full," he murmured, half to himself. "The horse-faced bitches of King's Landing would murder their own septas for lips like yours, girl. They would weep to see you."

Lady Gwin Ashford is thoroughly peeved. The Tourney of Ashford to celebrate her thirteenth nameday, and the lords are all but ignoring her, so what better alternative than to be entertained by her own sordid devices? Lannia's ordered to pick up the pieces and placate a very disgruntled Aerion Targaryen when he goes off in search of a whore.

She hadn't expected him to mistake her for one.
