“English is… is not first language,” the woman said quietly. Her accent was thick, and unmistakably Russian.
“Oh, sorry! I’m speaking too fast, aren’t I? Sorry,” she took a breath, and held out her hand. “I’m Yuna,” she repeated. The woman took her hand quickly, her hands bony and delicate.
“Irina,” she replied, before gesturing for Yuna to sit with her. Quickly, Yuna did. “Sorry, I have not been in Canada long.”
“No problem at all; welcome to Canada! Is that your boy?” Yuna asked, gesturing over to the child that had similar hair to Irina, which was poking out from under his helmet. He was taller than Shane, though his little hockey outfit still seemed to still dwarf him. He had a serious look on his face, but his eyes were light as he watched the other boys play. He was tapping his stick on the ice, clearly itching to get into the game.
“Ah, yes,” Irina nodded, taking a few seconds to translate the question, “Ilyusha.” Irina looked over at her son, a small smile on her face. “Is my Ilya.”
Or: Ilya and Irina move to Canada for a fresh start when he is six years old. He meets Shane Hollander at ice hockey practice, and they grow up together (and of course, fall in love).

“There’s a smoking area down the street, by Monk’s,” Shane tried again, “Uh, it’s just, like, a rule we have. With the local businesses, y’know. I’m Shane, I run the tattoo parlor, just over…”
Shane trailed off, gesturing awkwardly back to the studio. The guy was still silent, and still smoking, and honestly looked like he might be about to pounce on him. Whether it was to kiss him or kill him he wasn’t sure, but Shane didn’t think he’d mind it either way.
“Okay,” The guy exhaled more smoke, but Shane was more concerned with the way his accent wrapped around the word okay. It sent an ugly kind of shockwave through him, a feeling that he’d grasped with both hands in high school and shoved so far down he was sure he’d never feel it again. He hoped he’d never feel it again. “Shane, from the tattoo parlour.”
Shane runs the only tattoo parlour in a suffocatingly small town. Ilya is looking for a fresh start selling flowers. What could go wrong?

“I’m calling from the Child Services Department, Ilya Grigorievich,” the woman continued, and Ilya frowned deeply. “Your brother Alexei Rozanov and his wife died yesterday in a car accident.”
Twice in his life, Ilya had felt like this. The ice around his heart melted just enough for the numbness to vanish and give way to a sharp, stinging pain. It lasted only two seconds before he managed to compose himself. At the end of his first two years playing professionally, Ilya is not signed with Boston. After his surprise reentry to the draft, the Montreal Metros stun the hockey world by choosing Ilya Rozanov, Shane Hollander's arch rival, to join their team. Neither Ilya nor Shane are particularly happy with this arrangement.
For Shane, he's spent the past two years trying very hard not to remember that awkward moment in the showers, when he sort of kind of got aroused at the sight of Ilya's ass, and then bolted out of the locker room without looking back, embarrassment hot on his cheeks. Having Rozanov around again isn't good for his mental and physical stability, regardless of how great they are on the ice together.
For Ilya, he can't afford a distraction like Hollander right now, not after his career has been thrown into jeopardy. He can't be sent back to Russia, not now, so he commits himself to playing fantastic hockey and putting as much distance between the Metros prodigy and himself as possible.
Too bad their coach decides to make them roommates on the road this season. That should go well, right?

“Oh, really?” Ilya glanced sideways at the man on the horse next to him. Those ceremonies were practically a holy tradition in the kingdom, and always a very big deal. Not like Ilya really cared about such things.
“Yeah. Some couple from Ashenford or something, my father said. They’re quite young, apparently, so that’s even more special.”
“I’ve never been to one.”
“What?!” Shane’s head snapped towards him. “You’ve never been to the ceremony? Are you kidding me?”
Ilya was a little amused by Shane’s outrage. Of course, he would react like that. Ilya assumed that it was probably very high on Shane’s priority list to find his soulmate. “No, never. Not a clue what goes on there.”
“Oh my god”, Shane said, exasperated. “Well, so first of all, the Concord Ceremony obviously is a ritual to create a fixed bond between two soulmates. You know that much, right?”
Ilya smirked a little at Shane’s exasperated tone. “Obviously.”

“Tilt your head,” says the voice, and now the fingers are on his chin, doing it for him. Said delicately, as if this is his first ever nosebleed. He likes the idea that the slammer of this door thinks Ilya is a stranger to violence. It’s a gentle thought, another Ilya from another life, who isn’t familiar with blood in his teeth and broken bones. Ilya cracks his eyes open.

You never hit Hollander, you don’t let your friend on another team hit Hollander. You don’t hit him in practice. If someone did hit him, then you hit back until you drew blood.
