Whenever John’s cousin found herself once more at Kilmartin Castle, freshly returned from some far-flung escapade that no proper noblewoman ought even to have imagined, Francesca made a point of being elsewhere. Or, when that proved impossible, she let her irritation show plainly: a scoff here, an exaggerated sigh there, and, if she were feeling particularly bold that day, a snobbish remark whenever Michaela laughed too loudly or crossed a room with that effortless confidence Francesca found both infuriating and deeply unsettling.
