"Varian," Rapunzel started, gesturing to him as a whole, "You've made... a lot of mistakes. You've done things that have hurt lots of people in the past. But everyone has made mistakes, good people and bad people alike. So, I'm going to ask you one thing. Do you think you're a good person?"
Varian blinked roughly, confusion slowly warping his expression. That was not what he'd been expecting to hear. At all.
"No." He said bluntly, his eyes finding their way back to the ground. There wasn't a kinder way to word it—Varian was a master of destruction. He was capable of gruesome and terrible things. No good person had the power or willingness to commit the crimes he had.
Rapunzel just smiled hopefully at him—the same smile she gave him when they were locked in a cell together.
"Do you want to be?"

Hugo Rottewange.
He worked at the local auto shop as a mechanic, and he was damn good at his job as reluctant as Varian was to admit this. He could change a tire in the blink of an eye, he could rework even the most complicated of wires like untying a knot, he could weld pieces like fitting together a puzzle. He had built his own goddamn motorcycle, putting any Harley to shame. He was the expert mechanic Varian could only dream of being.
And he looked damn fine while doing it, too. With his bleach blonde choppy hair pulled back, in his permanently oil stained wife beater that was too short for his long torso, dog tags clinking as he walked. Freckled muscles and copious piercings shining in the Coronan sunlight.
But it’s not like Varian liked Hugo, no. Varian loathed Hugo even more than he loathed his own father.
Or; after running from his shitty life in Old Corona, Varian starts fresh living with his cousin in The Capital. Unfortunately an obstacle to his perfect life comes in the form of a man who looks like he works with his hands and smells like Marlboro Reds.

Andrew quickly cut Varian off with a fake coo “you’re not a burden, you can stay here for tonight. I just want to know why you’re here.”
Varian tilted his head to the side, and Andrew could see a dark bruise forming around the eye his bangs had previously hidden. And in the light, without a heavy jacket around his shoulders, he noticed faint, finger shaped bruises around Varian’s neck.’
Or; After years of not seeing the traitor that ruined his life, Varian shows up on Andrew’s doorstep- hurt, helpless, and alone. And Andrew can’t help but revel in the opportunity to have his runaway pet back in his life.
