He focuses on her voice over the pain and rapidly dwindling oxygen. It sounds like she’s walking as she speaks—he can hear her footsteps. She says he’s earned his freedom. More than that, he’s a hero. She tells him it’s a good day: for humanity, for him. He wants to believe her.
The footsteps stop. A moment of silence, and then—“Why isn’t he out yet?”
OR
Simon gets the data. True her word, Ava pulls him out. It’s not necessarily over after that.

He remembered it rather clearly too. The numbing cold from bloodloss despite the flames licking at his skin, the smoke scratching his throat and filling his lungs, the piercing pain from the wood in his back, Dio’s screams as he clutched onto his head as everything began fading to black, how his quiet acceptance of the situation only barely kept his grief and terror at bay only to fade away to nothing-
So yes, Jonathan was rather certain he was supposed to be dead.
